Jenny Tang Reviews: A walk to remember

A walk to remember, by Nicholas Sparks journeys into the depths of the human heart and leads the main character, Landon to a decision so stunning that turns him into a completely different person. A Walk to Remember faces two main conflicts. The first one is man versus self, which is represented when Landon does not know what to do when he finds out about Jamie’s sickness, he has to fight with in himself to find the
courage to be there for her. Secondly is society versus self conveyed through Landon’s popular friends that laughs at him when he falls in love with Jamie who is considered to be far from cool, bible-bearing girl and unpopular.
Landon at the beginning of the book was just like any normal teenage boy who’s only concerns were girls and cars. His attitude about school was certainly very believable and realistic "hung with the in-crowd - (he was) an aimless, moody, reckless guy who breezed through school on looks and bravado. He had no plans, no future and no faith in himself" (Sparks, 14). However, after acting with Jamie in a Christmas play, he found himself wanting, and being with Jamie everyday, he was
falling in love with her “when I saw her I had butterflies in my stomach” (Sparks, 41).
It was not surprising that Landon started to fall for Jamie because she is truly a beautiful kind hearted girl that has the power to influence others. This quote is describing Landon's feeling of fear when he finds out about Jamie's incurable disease “The blood drained from my face and a sheet of dizzying images fluttered through my mind..." (Sparks150). From this quote, it’s obvious that Landon’s reaction was clearly how normal human would react but the most important part is how he dealt with it afterwards. As readers journeys along the book, one can easily sympathize Landon and Jamie’s unfortunate love for each other. Over all, Landon is a likable and believable character that can easily touch readers heart.
Nicholas Sparks A walk to remember is such a good read that I couldn't put the book down the minute I started reading Chapter 1. If anyone is in a mood to loose some tears or read a tragic love story should consider this book. Even people who does not like sad endings can consider reading it because it has the most amazing characters that will melt your heart into pieces. A walk to remember has an amazing plot that made me have complicated emotions and contradicting at the same time. Like I could be reading this chapter that had full of sweet and lovely scenes and suddenly the next chapter was like a thunder which made me cry and angry at the same time!

"Landon at the beginning of the book was just like any normal teenage boy who’s only concerns were girls and cars." maybe add most teenage boys, because not every guy you see is like that.

"From this quote, it’s obvious that Landon’s reaction was clearly how normal human would react but the most important part is how he dealt with it afterwards." how a normal human or how normal humans. and don't just directly add "but the most part... with it afterwards" Sounds a bit awkward.

"Even people who does not like sad endings can consider reading it because it has the most amazing characters that will melt your heart into pieces." I like your first part of the sentence but "melt your heart into pieces." doesn't fit, or it's a bit too much.

I love your first paragraph, makes me feel like I'm actually reading a real book critique's book review :D

Overall, I would want to read your book.

  5. 3 quote suggestion
1). “Landon to a decision so stunning that turns him into a completely different person.” I don’t really get what you are talking about. Is it about Landon choosing his own decision in his life? Or what decision, be specific :)
2). “It was not surprising that Landon started to fall for Jamie because she is truly a beautiful kind hearted girl that has the power to influence others.” You should put a comma between “beautiful” and “kind-hearted”. Also change “that” to “who”. :P
3). “As readers journeys along the book, one can easily sympathize Landon and Jamie’s unfortunate love for each other.” You shouldn’t put a “s” after “journey” because its plural. Also I don’t really get what you are talking about, are you trying to say throughout the novel while the readers are reading or what? Be specific, then it will be fine :)

I can tell you have really meaning of this book and you learn some things from it. I think you did a great job on writing your essay, very depth and smooth. Good Job :D

Overall from reading your essay I think I’m a bit interested in this novel and the way you said how is makes you cry and be angry at the same time, it makes me more interested.
