Vivi Chuang-- Reflective Essay
Stamps symbolize people’s wishes and make a letter worth. I love collecting stamps. Each of them represents different time periods, different countries, and of course different values. I love collecting stamps, especially when they connect me and my deceased uncle. My uncle loves collecting stamps too. He almost offered all his money to buy stamps. We used to collect it together. Sometimes, he gives me stamps for my birthday presents. They are very beautiful. And I remembered when I was young, he used to subscribe a pack of stamps from the post office every month. Every pack of stamps has different topic, for example, there were national parks like yellow stone park, famous place like Egyptian pyramid, and also well-known mountain like Mount. Fuji. Stamps travel from place to place, and I guess that is why my uncle and I LOVE collecting stamps. We wish we can travel as much as we can. After his death, my mom gave all his collections to me. Even though they look incredible, no matter how pretty they are, there is no more uncle now. The only relative who has the same hobby as me, is gone. I realize that collecting stamps is not as fun as before when there is no uncle.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite line from your reflective essay is -"Each of them represents different time periods, different countries, and of course different values." I like it because it contains deep meanings in just this one short sentences. I just found it appealing to me. My suggestions is that your concluding sentence could expand more, and you could have a complete ending with your thoughts about not having your uncle presence anymore. I like how you describes the fact that he's gone and how sad and empty it feels like receiving the remaining of his collections when he's no longer here. It really make me feel sympathy for you, and touching at the same time. I remember missing someone close to me, I feel empty and found things around me that belongs to them appears useless and lifeless. But I find myself feeling happy for her (that's my grandmother and her friend) since she could finally be out of the pain, and ease at last.

hey vivi!! :)
ReplyDeletemy favorite line is "Even though they look incredible, no matter how pretty they are, there is no more uncle now." it's a sad line but underneath this sentence, I think that there is a greater meaning.
for future improvement, i think that you should work on your last sentence from "...collecting stamps is not as fun as before when there is no uncle."
But overall, a very nice essay!! i enjoyed reading it :)

vivi,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you decided to write about a hobby of collecting stamps. I used to collect things too - stickers. I also like how each individual sticker had different designs on them, like the stamps you wrote about in your essay. "Each of them represents different time periods, different countries, and of course different values." I liked how you listed things that made stamps seem special, and not just squarish stickers used to stick on the envelopes.
"I realize that collecting stamps is not as fun as before when there is no uncle." In this line, "realize" should be changed to "realized" and "when there is no uncle" should maybe be changed to "when my uncle was actually there for me". Overall I found this story to be very touching the way you and your uncle share the same hobby of collecting stamps. You must have a great uncle. :)
