Ethan Frome, also the name of the main character, has a wife named Zeena, and her cousin, Mattie, helps around for the two married couple. Ethan secretly likes Mattie and Zeena raises suspicion about the relationship between Ethan and Mattie. One day, Zeena decided to seek treatment at another town, which would leave Mattie and Ethan alone in the house. Ethan tries to express his feelings to Mattie but fails at each attempt. Zeena came back and decides to fire Mattie and bring in a new girl; Ethan wanted to run away with Mattie but decides not to.
The character, Ethan Frome, is a believable character. After Ethan Frome and Mattie talked to each other as Zeena was out, “he remembered that he had not even touched her hand.” This shows that he is believable because he is a shy person, which is normal for many people in which they like a person but is afraid to make a move. Another example that Ethan Frome is a believable character is when Hale’s wife praises Ethan Frome that he is a patient man that cares for his sickly wife, Ethan Frome decides not to run away since “even if he had had the heart to desert [Zeena] he could have done so only by deceiving two kindly people who had pitied him.” This shows that he is guilty of thinking about running away from Zeena and that Mrs. Hale’s words made him guilty. Having a feeling of guilt is a normal feeling in people and therefore, Ethan Frome is a perfectly believable character. Also, when Ethan Frome and Mattie decided to run into the elm tree with a sled, he wanted to sit in front of Mattie and stammered, “Because I – because I want to feel you holding me.” This shows that Ethan Frome is affectionate towards Mattie and that he wants to feel satisfied before he dies. It is believable because people usually want to be satisfied before they die.
People who have affairs or people with sickly wives should read this book because it shows what happens to Ethan Frome as he has an affair with Mattie while Zeena is ill and drives Mattie out of the house. Overall, I liked this book because it was realistic and it was kind of sad.

Overall, this review is well written but "Zeena came back and decides to fire Mattie and bring in a new girl; Ethan wanted to run away with Mattie but decides not to." should be changed because the two ideas don't really go together.

In this sentence I think therefore is a good way to transition, it shows the connection between the two sentences, because of this happens.
“This shows that he is guilty of thinking about running away from Zeena and that Mrs. Hale’s words made him guilty. Having a feeling of guilt is a normal feeling in people and therefore, Ethan Frome is a perfectly believable character.”
For these two sentences, I would combine them together to make them form a larger sentence. Both the sentences are saying something similar so I think you should combine them.
“This shows that he is believable because he is a shy person, which is normal for many people in which they like a person but is afraid to make a move.”
I think this sentence is kind of uses which too much, so I think you should change the second one.
But overall I really liked your essay, it really makes me want to read the book.
I like realistic novels since we can learn many things from these books.
ReplyDeleteas for the lines:
This shows that Ethan Frome is affectionate towards Mattie and that he wants to feel satisfied before he dies
umm before he dies? is he ill?
