Part 3: Opinions on the American Dream 10B

Copy and paste quotes that are opinions people have said about the American Dream (though they don't have to actually say "the American Dream" in the quote if they're talking about the same ideas).

Once everyone has finished, comment on each other's opinions, comparing and contrasting the ideas presented.

  2. Traditionally, Americans have sought to realise the American dream of success, fame and wealth through thrift and hard work. However, the industrialisation of the 19th and 20th centuries began to erode the dream, replacing it with a philosophy of "get rich quick". A variety of seductive but elusive strategies have evolved, and today the three leading ways to instant wealth are large-prize television game shows, big-jackpot state lotteries and compensation lawsuits. In this article, Matthew Warshauer, Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, examines why so many Americans are persuaded to seek these easy ways to their dream.

Surrounding American citizens is the thought process that it is no longer a possibility to obtain or even come close to these high points of life. Yes, the process of reaching any greater standard of living is most definitely a difficult task. Although, it is also a very possible task. Regardless of whether or not an individual comes from great wealth or great poverty, the power to change one's past must and can come from within. I am convinced that despite our current economic crisis, it is still very possible to start off with nothing, yet still obtain the American dream; that is a life of success, happiness, and the sustainability to support one's self and family, comfortably or affluently. The American dream of success comes from nothing other than determination, self-motivation, and it must start with you.

  5. “We need a new spirit of community, a sense that we are all in this together, or the American Dream will continue to wither. Our destiny is bound up with the destiny of every other American.”
    Bill Clinton

“The American dream is, in part, responsible for a great deal of crime and violence because people feel that the country owes them not only a living but a good living.”

I would say that it's hard to have an American Dream if you can't get an education and you can't feed your family. Again, I learned this as an adult, not as a child, because I was shielded from those problems as a child. I didn't know that across the world, hundreds of millions of people would never enjoy education or basic health services. I didn't know that. A big part of the American Dream for me is, again, yes, the ability to speak one's mind, and the civil and political liberties that we enjoy there. But also, making sure that there's some sort of safety net, so that people just don't hit the ground and end up in the ground. That's a big part of the American Dream in my view, is not having to worry if you're going to not have another meal to eat, or not worrying that if you lose your job, then your whole family, you know, collapses into the poor house.

  7. Daisy Viki:
We dislike the first quote because it seems really negative. However, we agree with the second quote how people should take actions to fulfill their dreams instead of just thinking about it.

  10. Sandra, the opinion that you posted deals with the American Dream is responsible to or leads people to doing; in contrast to my example shows that people still believe that The American Dream is very much alive and achievable

Your first quote is very condescending of the American Dream. Tt shows that The American Dream isnt real or achievable except in your dreams. In contrast to our quote it shows optimism about the American Dream and that it is still very much alive.

For the second quote, we think that in order to achieve the american dream, instead of it come to you, you should go out and fulfil your own dream. we like your quote it shows different opinions than us. we also like your third quote because it is very true.
