Stanley Su - Reflective Essay

I like both my first and last name. My first name is somewhat uncommon and people don't constantly mispronounce it. However, whenever someone says "stand" i think there saying Stan and it always catches my attention. I asked my aunt why she named me "Stanley" and she just said that i looked like a Stanley. I was disappointed when i looked up what my name meant. I looked up other names and most of them meant something cool like brave, beauty, intelligent, angelic or strong but not my name. My name meant stone clearing. At first i laughed and decided to look for what stone clearing meant. While i was searching up stone clearing i found out that "stanley" was a name particularly given to poor farmers that cleared the farm of stones. I was a little disappointed; however, i still dont resent my name.

  1. hi stanley [even tho i dont really know you :P]

i like your sentence- "whenever someone says 'stand' i think they're saying Stan and it always catches my attention". it happens to me too! [wendy/windy] haha.
maybe you can give more details about why you don't resent your name even after you found out it meant stone clearing and just explain abit more.
your essay's cool tho, and i enjoyed it :)

  3. stanley,
Your story is hilarious, I like it. I found it quite interesting on how it was your aunt who named you and not your parents. I never knew that stanley meant stone clearing - funny!
"I asked my aunt why she named me "Stanley" and she just said that i looked like a Stanley." I love this sentence, because it seems like something I would say since I can never can come up with good reasons for... basically anything!
"I was a little disappointed; however, i still dont resent my name. " This sentence could be improved by changing "dont" to "don't" and "i" to "I". Overall, I liked it, your essay is one of the funniest ones I've read so far.

Favorite Line: "While i was searching up stone clearing i found out that "stanley" was a name particularly given to poor farmers that cleared the farm of stones."
I like this line because it made me laugh a little. It was a little ironic because everybody wants their names to mean something nice, but the name stanley turned out to be something that none of us expected.
Improvement: "I was disappointed when i looked up what my name meant. I looked up other names and most of them meant something cool like brave, beauty, intelligent, angelic or strong but not my name."
It sounds kind of repetitive when you said "I looked up" twice. Maybe you can use a different phrase and remember to capitalize your "I"s! :D
